Decking the halls always starts with the mantel for me. It’s where I set the stage and the vibe for the rest of the house. This year, being in a new house with a whole new fireplace mood, I wanted to go with drama. After we gave the plain fireplace a makeover, I brought my vision to life….Here are the details.
When I create a mantel scape for Christmas, I use the same techniques to design the look.
Color Scheme
Before I decorate each year, I decide on a color scheme I want to incorporate into the decor. This way I have a better guide and it keeps the decor throughout the house more cohesive. This year’s color pallet I chose black, brown, butternut, white and green.
Theme
I like to have a theme directed vision which helps me to execute the look in my head. This year I wanted drama and a more symmetrical, sophisticated vibe. Since our tree would be next to the mantel and because it’s flocked, I knew I wanted to bring some white into the look.
Step 1
I start with a base of garland and anchor it with command hooks and small nails. This look I added 4 strands of cedar and 2 strands of norfolk pine. Then I added 2 strands of a lighted birch garland. I love that it was wired so I could maneuver the branches to give more heigh and fullness. I also added a greenery swag on the mirror to add. more height and draw the eye upward.
Step 2
Next I add another layer of texture with berry stems and flowers. This gives another dimension to the arrangement and how I achieved a more dramatic vibe.
Step 3
Finally add lighting to give the ambiance and glow. Since the birch garland was prelit, I didn’t need to add additional lights. However, I did add gold candlesticks with birch candles to bring in more height and draws the eye upward.
I just love how it turned out and think it might be my all time favorite mantel so far.
