So many times I’m asked, “how do I decorate with pillows?” Too many pillows….Theres no such thing in my rule book! Pillows are like shoes, you can never have too many. One way I love to change things up seasonally is with pillows. However, how do you store them all. I usually only buy covers and swap out with the nicer inserts. Then I hang the old ones with pant hangers and change out whenever I want a refresh. Easy way to get changes quickly and more affordable too. Here’s my latest combo for the transition into summer….
Sometimes creating a look with pillows can be overwhelming. I’m sharing a few tips I use when seelcting the pillows for a room.
Color Scheme
First find a color pallet you like in 3-4 shades and search for pillows in that color story. For summer I wanted to lighten things up so I’m using, creme, taupe, beige and a soft terra-cotta shade.
Mix Patterns
For interest, mix up a variety of patterns like stripes, checks, plaids and florals. As long as you keep them in a color story, they should go well together.
Add Texture
Be sure to vary the texture with fabric types too. Fringe, trims and various textiles create a visual interest and will give more character to the look.
Inserts
To get that designer look, be sure to get higher quality inserts that have shape and aren’t “bouncy” or flimsy. The test is to do a karate chop in the center and have it hold that shape. Also, getting your insert slightly larger than the cover size gives it a fuller look. Then all you have to do is switch out the covers and store them. It keeps you from having to store pillows everywhere.
Sizes
Another trick is not use all the same size. I like to use a few 22″x 22″ in the background and then 20″ x 20″ and 18″x 18″ mixed in. Remember to go off the scale of your sofa and work in odd numbers.
I then added the room accents to keep the color theme of the space and allow the room to look more cohesive, but not matchy matchy.
