Pretty Ways To Add Black Accents To Your Home Decor

“Women think of all colors except the absence of colors, I have said that black has it all. White too. Their beauty is absolute, it is the perfect harmony” ~Coco Chanel I love the classic, iconic style of Ms Coco and have to agree. Theres something so chic and classy about black. Not only do I love it in my wardrobe, but I love to incorporate it into my home. I love how it pops and gives everything around it a sharp contrast. It honestly makes everything feel more sharp, constant and soothing to me. Many people are afraid to use it so I wanted to share a few simple ways you can add black to your home.

Another iconic decorator that uses a lot of black is Joanna Gaines. I think thats why I’m so drawn to her designs. I love how she uses it in her homes and the dramatic play it gives to a space. I have a tour of here historic Hillcrest estate if you want to see a great example Tour My Stay At The Magnolia Hillcrest Estate

One of the first pieces I ever painted black was this old china cabinet. I had painted it a few years ago with some chalk paint and it was ok for the space but once we moved here it looked awful in the space. I decided to go for it and give it a huge makeover (that only cost me $15) Here are some of the ways black can change a room.

Furniture

I used the Waverly chalk paint from Walmart in the color Ink to get this gorgeous look. Then I finished it with a clear wax . I absolutely love how it brought the whole piece to life and updated it as well

This is one of my recent updates with black paint. This old secretary is a family heirloom but never looked right in any area of our home. We have very limited places for it to go but I just couldn’t part with it. I recently updated our daughters old room and decided it would fit well in there. However, the cherry stain dated it and really looked bad in the space.

A simple coat of. my favorite chalk paint gave it a new life and now it makes sense in our home. It really gave the piece a better statement and a new happy home to stay.

This old hope chest also got a facelift. I love it in this room and it’s filled with some very special memorabilia of. mine. But I felt it looked too “old Fashioned” in our newly updated guest room. I wanted the bed to stay the statement piece and it made the hope chest loot frumpy. So of course I got my good ole black paint and fixed her up. I love how it pops in the room now. I also updated the orange wood frames on the duck prints and gave them a swipe of black paint. It’s amazing how much the prints rally pop in the room now.

Outdoors

We even gave our deck an update with black paint. It’s amazing how much the greenery and foliage pops with the black backdrop of the deck. Our famous beer barn got an update too. I love the contrast of the black and white scalloped umbrella and the table set up looks so much more chic and sophisticated.

Accent areas

I love a good crisp white kitchen but I wanted a little drama in this space. The kitchen is so small and I wanted to give it a little somethin’ somethin’….black paint to the rescue. I tied in other areas of our home by adding a pop of black to the peninsula. I used one of my favorite black colors, Tricorn Black by Sherwin Williams. Don’t worry, I’ll list all my favorite black colors at the end of the post.

This staircase makeover has to become of the most popular and dramatic changes in our home. We started by tearing out the carpet and then it went from there. You can read all about the project details here How To Update Carpeted Stairs With PaintHow To Add The Finishing Touch To A Stairway With Board & Batten. This has been one of my favorite ways to add black to your home.

Can you believe the difference? I love how crisp and chic this space looks now. I also have a post on how we created this cane cabinet look here How To Transform A Boring Built In Desk Into A Beautiful, Trendy Bar, it was a super simple project that made a big impact to the space.

Doors

Another favorite  way I love to add black and it’s where I fist started a few homes ago. Painting interior doors black. I got inspired several years ago to try it and I absolutely love the look. (and no fingerprints!) I think it gives a distinct crips look to any wall color and love how fresh it makes things look in the room.

Have I changed your mind yet? Do you think you’d like to add a little pop of black too? I know it’s not for everyone, but like with every wardrobe, it’s always nice to have a little black dress or piece in your wardrobe for classic style. So, why not in your house too?

I have a white cabinet that I would like to paint black. What color do you paint inside? I plan on decorating with all all white dishes and other servewear.

      Hi Ruthie,

How you do the inside is up to you. I ended up painting the inside of the last piece I did and then added some coordinating wallpaper to the back. Our china hutch is mirrored so I didn’t paint inside it and let the natural pine.

      Thanks for following along.
