How To Make A Concrete Plant Stand

One of my favorite things to do is create something that I’ve seen somewhere else for a fraction of the cost. This project was so much fun and so easy and I’m really excited to share it with you. The first concrete project I did was this concrete fire bowl How To Create A Garden In A Small Space It was so fun and it’s so gorgeous when burning. When I saw the price of this plant stand in a magazine, I thought, umm way too pricey. So I decided to create my own DIY concrete plant stand, and I love how it turned out. Follow along for all the details…

The supply list is very small and inexpensive for this project.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • a bag of concrete-I used Quickrete because it sets up faster
  • water
  • Large bucket for mixing
  • bucket to use as a form- Size of your choice
  • 36″ dowel 1/2″ diameter- cut into 3 even sections(12″)
  • Shovel or concrete mixer
  • cooking oil for easy removal of concrete
  • spray paint color of your choice if you want to add some
  • stain color of your choice for the legs

First decide how thick you want the top of the stool. I wanted mine about 3″ thick. Once you determine the depth measure and mark in the bucket for so you have a line as a guide to pour the concrete.

Next, grease the inside of the bucket thoroughly so the concrete will release easily.

Next pour in the amount of concrete you think you”l need and add some water gradually. Mix thoroughly until it becomes a cake batter consistency. If it’s too thick add more water, too thin add more mix. Once you get the consistency, pour it into the bucket mold to the line you have marked.

If you have extra left over, just rinse it out with plenty of water and dispose of it(not in your sink!) Tap the bucket on the ground to release any bubbles in the concrete. Also make sure you have it on a level surface as it dries.

Now that your concrete is in the bucket, Add your legs starting in the center and making sure each leg is evenly placed. You can use the sides of the the bucket to support them. Keep an eye on them as the concrete is setting up and be sure they are still balance and haven’t shifted.

Once the legs have set up before you remove it, you can stain the legs if that is your plan.

Once the concrete is set up, turn the bucket upside down and shift the bucket on the sides a little to loosen. Tap the top gently with a mallet if you have to but very gently so you don’t crack it. Then slowly giggle the bucket to lift it from the bench.

Ooohh and ahh over your magnificent work. I was so excited about the texture and look of the concrete I could have jumped for joy!

If you are planning to paint the bottom half of the legs. Measure the area you want painted then use painters tape to mark the spot and give a sharp edge to the painted area.

Then cover the top and part of the legs you don’t want paint to get on. Be sure it’s sealed tightly.

Then in light sweeping motions holding the can about 10″ away to spray in soft strokes. Let each coat dry fully before spraying again to avoid drips and unevenness.

Then, you’re all done and ready to style your beautiful new stool. There are so many options for this fun little piece. You can use it as a riser, or even as a decor item all by itself.

I hope you enjoyed this DIY and that you’ll try one yourself. How fun is that to make your own decor that looks expensive(but you know it’s not-wink wink)

This is well put together – but i wish it gave credit do the original designer – Ben Uyeda. “In Episode 8 of HomeMade Modern Ben Uyeda shows how to make a concrete and wood stool in a bucket.”

      Hi Melanie,

I don’t know who that is? I got inspiration from someone on Instagram and made up my own version . There are tons of duplicate projects on Pinterest as well so it’s really hard to say who the actual “original designer is”. People have their own versions of projects that they get from various avenues. I always give credit if there is a source I received it from. I did another concrete project before this one that inspired my project.

      Thanks

      Thanks

  3. Great work! I loved the idea of painting the DIY concrete stand legs half. It looks so cool and amazing.
