This farmhouse bedroom makeover was long over due. It was our daughters bedroom but I never did much with it because it was her space when she was home from school and we never had the time to make any changes. She recently moved into her own place for the first time and took everything with her! lol …So it was the perfect time to give the space a refresh. It was originally a French vintage look and I never was happy with the gray wall color. I wanted a fresh, cozy and crisp vibe so here’s what I did to liven the space up.
Create A Mood
Before decorating a space, I love to create a mood board. I look for key items I like and it gives e a good visual direction when selecting pieces to accent and place in the room. Here is the example of what I put together…
First let’s start with a little before. Unfortunately I didn’t get the best before photos. So this will give you a general idea of what the space was like before (after my daughter cleared out the room) I never really liked the gray we used on the walls. It pulled off a lavender look and just didn’t give the vibe I was wanting. It worked out ok with the French vintage theme we had going but I was ready for a change.
Bedding
Just switching out the bedding is a great way to make simple changes in a bedroom. I wanted a simple pattern on the bedding against a white backdrop. I love mixing patterns so I thought this stripe you be fun mixed with the wallpaper pattern. Since I was going with a simple color pallet, I wanted to vary patterns to create more texture and interest .
Wall treatments
Another easy way to update a space is with creative wall treatments. Just changing out paint color is fun, but adding some character and texture to a wall really adds a wow factor and unexpected element to the room. For this room I decided to add a board and batten feature on 2 of the walls and a bold contrasting pop of black.
We used 1 1/2″ lattice boards for the stiles to give some depth to the wall and give a board and batten look. It was a very inexpensive and simple way to add character to the walls. We were able to create a board and batten look without a heavy amount of work involved.
The fresh coat of white paint really made a difference in brightening up the entire room. The old trim was so yellow and drab. I chose Alabaster by Sherwin Williams and Tricorn Black as the accent color.
Furniture
Updating old furniture pieces can also make a huge difference in a room. This antique secretary was handed down from my husbands grandparents. It’s an old piece and I couldn’t part with it, however it just didn’t fit in anywhere in our home. I decided to paint it and revive the style to make it more relevant in our home.
I love how stately and elegant it looks painted black and the fact that we can still have this special piece but keep it current and functional. I lined the back with the wallpaper to give it some character and help the accents inside stand out.
Feature Wall
Creating a feature wall behind the bed gives so much visual interest and excitement to the whole room. I love this delicate branch print and how it draws the eye around the room. I love the modern, unique vibe that it gives in this room.
Accents
Simple decor pieces can update a room and give life to old spaces. I spray painted the wicker side table and love how it turned out, especially against the wallpaper. Adding greenery is the perfect way to freshen up and area of a room along with pretty lighting for ambiance.
I decided to keep the vintage awning and chandelier for a little whimsy. I love the depth the awning gives to the bed area. The chandelier gives off a pretty ambiance of light as well.
The only thing left to add is an area rug which is also a great way to update a room. I haven’t quite found the perfect one yet. We are also planning to replace the carpet with hardwood flooring so stay tuned for an update once we completer that project.
So what do you think? I love how it turned out and can’t wait for our first guest to stay there. Our daughter loves the new look so thats a win!
