Hey friends! I love beautiful vintage ornaments. My favorite way to display them is in a pretty bowl or under a cloche. This year I even hung some over our bedroom mantel. I wanted some really unique and somewhat color coordinated ornaments for display and couldnt quite find what I was looking for. SO I decided to make my own & remember this project I had done several years ago. It was so simple that I couldn’t wait to share it with y’all. It’s so easy and inexpensive you could actually throw it together quickly and have a beautiful Centerpiece or Christmas tree ornaments in no time. They would also make great gifts or look pretty tied to a gift. For more homemade gift ideas you can visit this post SIMPLE, CREATIVE FRIEND AND NEIGHBOR GIFT IDEAS. Keep scrolling for a step-by-step on how to make DIY Christmas ornaments.
I love how these turned out and the price is great too.
Like I said earlier, these are super easy to make and you can select any color scheme you want of course. The colors I selected happen to go with my rustic chic theme and I love how the combinations turned out. Here’s what you need to create your own ornaments.
Supplies
- Clear ornaments in plastic or glass(I used glass) Any size you want.
- Acrylic Craft paint in the colors you like. I used a forest green, antique white, gold, silver and black.
- Disposable cups. They need to be wide enough to hold the opening of the ornament off the bottom of the cup. This is based on the size of ornaments you decide to use.
- Water (expensive I know lol)
- Glitter (optional) I did not use any.
Step 1
First I opened my new bottles of paint and added water to the top of the bottle and shook them well. The paints need to be diluted in a 2:1 or 3:1 ratio. To watery will not adhere will and too thick the paint won’t move well.
Step 2
Next I added the paint combinations I wanted by pouring in the color combinations I wanted to try. Just have fun with it and vary the looks. Each one will look totally different. I would say 1/2-1 tsp in . I wanted more of the glass or transparent look on mine so I went lighter on the amount of each paint I added.
Step 3
Once you’ve added your paint, just swirl the ornament around while holding it upright to incorporate the colors a little. Then, just tip them upside down and set on top of the cup…let the paint do its thing naturally flowing wherever it goes. You’ll see all kinds of random patterns developing (and that’s the point)
Keep the ornaments tipped upside down at least 24 hours to completely dry. You could also add different types of glitter or confetti. Since I used metallic paints they already had a soft sparkle to them, but glitter would be pretty too.
I just love all the random patterns each color combination created.
And that’s it friends…easy peasy! I have mine displayed in a beautiful marble bowl but I may switch them to my tree. So many options for them and what a fun & unique gift they make as well. I find if the ornaments are cold it accelerates the clumping of the polish. So in addition to luewarm water try to warm up the outside of the ornament with a blow-dryer set to the lowest setting for about 10-15 seconds. Just long enough so that the ornament isn’t ice cold.
I love the idea! I’m going to try it but I have one question. When you sit the ornaments inside the cup, do the edges touch the cup? (Probably lol!) but won’t it mess up the paint? I’m not sure how to explain this.
The paint is on the inside of the ornaments so no it doesn’t touch the cup 🙂
