How To Paint Windows DIY And Tips

Hey friends, hope you are well. Today I’m sharing a project I’ve wanted to do for a few years but a little hesitant to try. After much research and prep work I’m happy to say I completed my painted window project and I’m in love!! So, today I want to share with you my tips on how to paint windows.

It’s actually crazy to see how much of a change it made to paint the window frames black. I can’t believe the difference it added to the whole room! Everything looks more sharp, crisp and sophisticated. It was so worth the work and I’d definitely do it all over again.

Here are the supplies you need:

  • a large roll of masking film_it will depend on how many and the size of your windows. I used one roll for 8 very large windows.
  • painters tape- I like the Frogtape brand, it gives really crisp lines
  • Rustoleum 2X spray paint in black

#1 Prep

The first step to to tape off all the edges inside and out of your window. Take your time here making sure it’s perfectly lined up and pressed onto the window sealed well.

Next, place plastic of the window itself securing with more tape. You don’t have to go completely around the plastic. Just be sure its secure and tight on the window.

Then, tape off all the surrounding areas giving plenty of protection for overspray.

#2 Paint

When everything is prepped be sure to have a door and or a fan going for good ventilation. It’s also a good idea to wear a mask to help with the fumes. Now you are ready to paint. Make sure you are holding the can at least 10″ away from the surface you are painting. Go in long gentle strokes and don’t worry about every single spot being covered or you will be tempted to spray too soon and create drips. The secret is light sweeping strokes not too closely to the frame.

Once the first coat is dry, you can add another coat. I actually used a flashlight to hold up closely and check to see if I had missed any spots. That was really helpful because between the black color and the glare of the plastic, it can be hard to tell. You want to make sure it’s all covered before removing your coverings.

#3 Remove all your protection

Once you’ve checked up closely to be sure you haven’t missed in areas, let it completely dry to the touch. Then you can remove the protective coverings and marvel at your amazing work!

It was awesome seeing the crisp , clean lines. I did have some overspray in areas that somehow got past my plastic. But don’t panic! It’s easy to remove with a magic eraser and some lemon essential oil. I also repainted all my trim after the windows were dry and it also helped with any overspray.

Finally, I washed the inside and outside of the windows and wow not only did they look amazing with the new painted look, they sparkled too. It’s amazing what a difference just washing your windows makes LOL!

Can you believe the difference between the two windows/ I love how they pop and frame everything on the outside too.

It also noticed that it make all the other decor pieces and furniture stand out more.

So Tah Dah all finished and like I said, I’m in love. Every bit of the work was worth it and I’m so happy with the results. The only thing I questioned was “why did I wait so long?” I hope if you are contemplating a project this helped you to learn that with a little research, you can have the confidence to go for it. DOn’t be intimidated or doubt your skills. Just do your diligence beforehand and then make it happen!

I’m curious why not use a brush and regular paint instead of spray paint?

    • txbittons@verizon.net says:

      Hi Janet,

Because since the frames are metal I didn’t want there to be any brush strokes. Spray paint leaves no marks and adheres better. and is more concentrated than regular paint in a can. If it were brushed on it would need a few coats to cover.

      Thanks for following
      Deborah xoxo

Love the black. I painted our vinyl window trim bright white with prime+paint spray and loved the look. Cleaner and razor blade cleaned up the windows! Looks great! Are you going to carry the black trim throughout the home or just on that level? it looks great, laura in Co

How to paint window frames w/o tape ?
Is there a specific tool ?

    • txbittons@verizon.net says:

      Hi meg.

I don’t know because I used tape to be sure of a clean line and protect the other areas. If using spray paint I highly recommend it.

      Hope that helps

With havin so much content and articles do you ever run into any issues of plagorism or copyright infringement?

My blog has a lot of completely unique content I’ve either authored myself or outsourced but it appears a lot of it is popping it up all over the internet without my

being stolen? I’d truly appreciate it.
